This Financial Times article, “Which New York Member’s Club Are You?”, made me laugh today. The city has seen an incomparable boom in members-only spaces lately — and while a few noisy grumblers online can make it feel otherwise, it takes about five minutes inside any of ‘em to know the scene is thriving.
Pretense aside, these spaces are admittedly handy in my own life. Most people (myself included) live in small apartments in New York, which often creates the need for a “third space” — one to entertain clients, take meetings, socialize with friends, or have dinner without having to do hand-to-hand combat for a reservation.
During the day, I might take meetings or use my laptop to write while someone intermittently checks if I need more coffee or lunch. In the evening, I meet friends for drinks, socialize and people-watch, often staying for dinner and into the evening, where you can flit from space to space internally (at San Vicente West Village for example, the well-lit studio space for work, the living room for a coffee, the dining room for a proper meal, the patio for sunset cocktails, the billiards room for moody hangs) and end your night dancing in their nightclub.
I’m a member at The Twenty Two and San Vicente Bungalows, which seem to be the two most people have been clamoring for membership in lately, to the point that I’ve gotten cold DMs from strangers bribing me for a recommendation (obviously, I ignored them, so please don’t do this).
Both places require recommendations from existing members, which is an organic way to keep the crowd feeling like an expanded friend group. I never walk into either spot and don’t encounter a few people I know. That familiarity, good food, and genuinely fun vibe have quickly made both central to my social life.
This month’s Inbox Stylist is inspired by a memorable night at The Twenty Two with my friends , Paulina Liffner, and Lucy Delius. Girls kept complimenting Lucy (ever dripping in diamonds) on her (self-designed) jewelry, particularly her gorgeous collar, which she wore with The Row’s red checked Esperanza skirt, navy Alaïa flats, and a white tee.
I was in a two-piece silk set by Rohé (top, shorts), which got us chatting about the other brands we love wearing right now: Kallmeyer, Ruadh, Studio Nicholson, Tove, Attersee, and High Sport.
Paulina was wearing a sample from her line Little Liffner, which is out now, a flat little basket bag that’s the perfect New York sort of bag you could wear during one of those days that wear into the night without going home in between. And that wasn’t the only great bag: Olivia had a vintage Birkin perched on the table.
