Shopping Diary: A YSL-Coded H&M Coat, Snags from Phoebe Philo and The Row Sample Sale, and Hailey Bieber's Deep-Pull 80's Reference
What I Bought in October.
Hi friends!
It’s full-on fall in New York. After a brief dalliance with warmer weather over the weekend, our coats and hats are back out, fully installed in our everyday wardrobes for the next stretch. We’ve finished “planning fall wardrobes.” Now, we’re putting the said plan into practice.
It’s a funny time of year for shopping. You might notice a few closet holes here and there that need filling, but overall, most of us are staving off self-spending in anticipation of post-Thanksgiving price drops (they’ve already begun at Shopbop) — and allocating budgets toward buying gifts for others.
“What are you buying right now?” It’s a question I get every so often in DMs (you can follow me on IG here), and it got me thinking about how I overlook sharing that bit sometimes in an effort to be more service-minded and less… umm… braggy? With this purgatorial shopping season well underway, I feel like it’s a helpful time since I’ve been shopping more “here and there” than a full seasonal stock-up. Maybe my weird little efforts to punch up my basics will jog your brain, too.
Getting dressed daily rather than imagining what I’ll wear illuminated some needs. Need met opportunity with The Row sample sale in New York last week, the Sephora sale this week, Phoebe Philo’s breathlessly-awaited launch, and some other points of inspiration. Here’s what I got.
I’m rooting for The Gap. Even though they can’t seem to get it all the way together (despite many tries), I’ll still hope for a day when they return to their full Khaki Swing, Alanis Christmas crooning, teeth-baring Madonna 90’s glory. Appropriately, their 90s jean is my favorite pair of denim — I have three now. They wash wonderfully, and they’re under 50 bucks.
I’m looking forward to pairing them with this YSL-esque H&M coat, these lightweight Khaite x Oliver Peoples sunglasses, and these so-wrong-they’re-right red scuba boots from The Row, finished with this silly oversized tote from Bode. My sister and I oohed and aahed our way through the Bode store last week before a delicious dinner at Cervo’s — they still had the tote in stock when we were there. (And if you find yourself at Cervo’s after, order the clams, the paprika olives, and a bracingly cold 50/50 martini!)
Belts are everywhere right now, proliferating storefronts at every price point. I spoke with the Wall Street Journal about it last week, which sent me on a hunt for reasonably priced (but classic) options. I found this number by Anderson’s and this by Heaven Mayhem, and the price is right!
My favorite buy lately has been this pair of Coperni boots. The Western cut is flattering on the leg, the distressed brown feels fresh, and I love the exciting heel. Hayley Bieber recently wore them, so now only a few sizes remain. Snap them up if you see your size.
Mrs. Bieber's reference game is strong (though I suspect we owe the true credit to a stylist). This 1984 image of German model Nastassja Kinski sporting overalls and a black overcoat was a deep pull. It feels so current on HB. Due credit to
as well, who is the first person I can think of who was wearing overalls as fashion on IG. I plan to style my $60 Dickies with my black Khaite overcoat and the heels I snagged on Phoebe Philo’s launch day.And then, of course, there’s the ubiquitous Sephora sale. After a buggy weekend launch, it looks like the website is back to fully functioning. I grabbed the TikTok-lauded Merit Instant Glow Serum and Makeup by Mario Soft Sculpt, my favorite Nars lip pencil, and a few things from Hourglass, a brand I’ve been having a slow-burn love affair with: the Ambient Lighting Palette, the brow gel, the foundation/blush brush for precise application and the Veil powder brush, which I’ve seen used for sheer foundation application on… you guessed it, TikTok.
