The List: As Quickly As They Left, Skinny Jeans Return.
Plus: a member's club worth its salt, the politics of manicures, and the best shampoo on the market.
Happy New York Fashion Week to all who celebrate. I’ll be reporting from the shows in my usual anthropological style, but not today. Today, I just want to tackle the grab bag of miscellany that’s come across my desk and put some new things on your radar that I happen to think are great — fashion-related and not. - JG
I’m sure you saw that Frame re-issued a skinny jean with Alix Earle and it went bananas. Sold out in hours, etc, etc. It was only ever going to be a Gen Z megastar like her to bring back the pants the generation so ubiquitously shunned in 2020. If you’re a Millenial and still a little burned, maybe go for The Pencil instead, which isn’t quite so skinny and still leaves a bit of room at the ankle for a boot underneath.
Our friends at Sherman Field have assembled a selection of jewelry to fundraise for the California Fire Foundation, a nonprofit providing direct financial assistance (via gift cards) to wildfire victims immediately after disaster strikes. The foundation also offers emergency support to the families of fallen or injured firefighters. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of Sherman Field’s selected items will be donated to the California Fire Foundation.
Last year, I joined NYC outpost of The Twenty Two member’s club sight unseen. Last weekend, I finally got to see what I paid for — at least, a little bit. Cafe Zaffri, the club’s public restaurant, has opened up on the ground floor, and my buddy Jen Vitagliano was gliding around her dining room like she owned the place. (She does). She gave me a quick tour of some of the (still under construction) member’s areas as well. The space blew me away — it couldn’t look less like a Soho House (it’s safe to assume most mentions of Soho House in this newsletter are derogatory). Creamy plaster, soaring ceilings and an art collection as well-curated as the crowd all stood out. Nary a bandage dress or Real Housewife in sight, which is more than I can say for Casa Cipriani or Chez Margaux. My friend
and I had such a great time, we ended up splitting a bottle of wine after dinner at the behest of the (very good) Som, freshly moved over from Sartiano’s.Crown Affair’s new shampoos and conditioners, which offer a mix-and-match selection to best suit your mane. I’ve been using the Volumizing Shampoo and the Moisturizing Conditioner (THELOVELIST for 15% off). Also of note is Roz’s new Evergreen Styling Cream, which tames with moisture instead of crunch. It’s lovely to smooth flyaways or fuss up an overly prim blowout.
I check 1stdibs the way Diplo checks Raya — frequently and competitively. Recent acquisitions include throw pillows in Schumacher’s Daydream, a vintage church pew for alongside the back of my sofa, and a verdigris brass and alabaster lamp by Kalen Asenov. I’m stalking this vintage Bucherer 23mm watch and a pair of Hollywood Regency wrought iron benches, too. Also on my wishlist: a 70’s Hermes ash tray, perfectly patinated Willy Guhl spindle planters, this weird brass lotus lamp, and just about any overstuffed Louis Bergeres chair. Just thought I’d share.
If you may recall, MERIT and Completedworks collaborated on an earring duo last year. They’ve returned with a new, chic mirrored compact (launching today), cased in glinty chrome and perfect for backseat touch-ups. Like their Retrospect perfume bottle, its designed to nestle neatly in the palm of your hand.
The Auralee men’s s/s ‘25 show is important to me. Though, not more important than Schiaparelli’s ICARUS haute couture runway. Very little is more important to me than that. But Toteme’s show? That is what will find its way into my everyday closet.
Still Here’s new cotton sweatshirts — cleverly cut to hit right at the waist of their jeans — are destined for niche downtown ubiquity. I see them styled with Loewe’s new Ballet Runners (which launched today) or Spalwart sneakers.
Kind of fashion-related, but not: I’ve been listening to Mel Robbins on the train, and I have become obsessed with my Bose headphones. For someone that can’t stand the look of most over-ears, these are sleek and wildly functional. Not only is the sound quality outstanding, they aren’t made in some obtrusive shade of toothpaste. Bonus: they keep my ears warm. I have never been an Airpod person, but if you are, I encourage you to try Bose’s Ultra Opens instead. They’re more secure on the ear, they’re better engineered for comfort, and they’re smart enough to distinguish foreground from background noise. If you’ve ever talked to someone who has run water or shuffled papers while on their Airpods, you know that this is important.
Dr. Loretta’s new Hydrating Milky Essence is getting rave reviews from the beauty crowd. It reminds me of Rhode’s Glazing Milk, but perhaps milder and less sticky. I like it as a first step before makeup.
A few more Valentine’s Day gift ideas: Daphine’s new cord necklaces are very sweet and only $75. And Dorsey’s megapopular button-back Lucien earrings are back in stock (probably briefly). Moro Dabron’s Jamb Candles are infinitely refillable — I’m sure there’s a pun about the endless nature of your love in there somewhere. St. Rose’s Out of the Blue perfume is a woody triumph that begs for neck nuzzles. Ghia and Alice Mushrooms made a horny riff on Nutella. Or what about a cute little pocket mirror from Chell Fish? If you’re looking for that one sexy LBD, head directly for AFLALO’s Daqi dress. On the total opposite end of the spectrum, I would gladly take Comme Si’s new cotton flannel set.
The very IYKYK NYC brand…
