The Look is Sloane Peterson, Sloane Peterson is The Look.
Plus, Venetian Slippers and Toppy Tops!
As some would say, “It’s giving…” Sloane Peterson. More than Ferris Bueller’s paramour, she’s a style icon in her own right. She’s been on my mood board since college — and she sprang to my mind immediately when I saw this fringe jacket from Matches’ in-house line Raey a few days ago.
The jacket popped up again in
’s newsletter, along with a pair of Wales Bonner x Adidas Sambas I was smart enough to preorder a few days ago (usually, I’m not quick enough to snag these things).Paired with Levis (my trick is to buy a men’s size and have them tailored down), the ubiquitous Khaite belt (if this is out of your price range, I suggest hunting for vintage Brighton belts on eBay like this $20 gem) + earrings (Julius panel earrings yes, Julius hoop earrings no, tried them and ouch) and some modern sunnies, you’ve got a great homage to Miss Peterson without looking costumey.
You’ve heard of Shoppy Shops, but what about Toppy Tops? The “going out top” is back, and as a Millennial who has lived through this timeline once already, I’ve chosen to coin the term “Toppy Top” in its place.
Of course, TikTok has already moved on to “the fun pant” but I’m not a silver pants kind of girlie, so let’s keep it above the waistline for the sake of this convo. I like this elegant number by Roland Mouret, this off-the-shoulder fishnet moment, Magda Butrym’s enormous rosettes, and this cool twist on a t-shirt (pun intended).
I’m also into the Mary Jane slipper trend a.k.a The Venetian slipper, even simply as a matter of function. I bought a pair this past spring and they are irrefutably, deeply comfortable. I’m crazy about this wildly good aubergine pair and these in a shade of juicy tangerine. Matches also has a robust selection.
As a final thought, the whole bougie bathroom narrative is one I’d like to be excluded from. But I will tell you this: Element Brooklyn makes refill soap that smells exactly like Aesop’s Ressurection.
Please shop for me! As Carrie Bradshaw famously quipped, “I’m cheating on fashion with furniture.” My budget allocation is going toward moving costs, bedroom furniture, and home appliances. My mental energy is devoted to all the things I’m going to buy at the Union Square green market. So let me know what you get! My DMs are open over on Instagram. Tag me if you share the newsletter, it helps us grow so much!
