I couldn’t decide what to wear the other night. I was one day out from my period, and suddenly, my entire closet looked like it was going to bite. I tried on a million new and old things and hated it all. I’d spent the whole day sleeping, writing, and recovering from my marathon of anniversary events and politely bowed out of a few showroom appointments and a runway.
Finally, I landed on an old Row cream silk blazer — big and boxy to hide my distended PMS bloat — over a simple black sheath dress with old Dries heels and my new zebra haircalf Esha Soni bag. I put on a new Khaite ear cuff as my only jewelry and headed into the night feeling like a walking bubble.
At least luck was on my side geographically. The first event began at Casa Cipriani, all the way down at the South Street Seaport, and my itinerary worked its way uptown over the night, so at least I didn’t have to crisscross around. Moda Operandi had a “Jazz Cafe” set up, and almost as soon as I walked in, my internet friend
snagged me, which I was grateful for, given that I didn’t know many faces in the crowd. I looked down, and a photographer knelt at my feet, shooting my bag.I synched up with
and and at the next party—it’s so lovely to have good friends who make you feel cozy in a big room of strangers. Courtney was holding the oversized green Row clutch. I’ve been eyeing it since I saw it on Kendall Jenner, and I still can’t get it off my mind. We went to a Savette party where yet another green bag, an olive one, imprinted on me. We chatted with and my friend Nicole, who was in a head-to-toe Loro Piana look that sent me sleuthing the internet later that night.I cannot emphasize enough how great it is when your friends have the same social battery and bedtime as you. Courtney and I went to a really fun party that FWRD and Morgan Stewart threw and were ready to go home by exactly 9:30. PERFECT.
Footnote that Morgan smelled incredible, and I will find out what she was wearing (Gabs are you reading). Her line Renggli is worth a look, the coordinating denim and knits are especially standout and make an excellent canvas for a big accessory moment.
Yesterday, I woke up with a hoarse voice from yelling over the loud music. “Wow,” I thought. “I’m genuinely getting old.” The Tibi show was inspiring because it gave me new ideas for wearing old things. The clothes themselves felt like a lot of recycled ideas from the past — sporty and pragmatic as always, but pieces like reimagined nylon and bike shorts sung because of the styling, not the strength of the garments themselves.
Yeah, the vinyl boots were there, and the Bottega-esque fuzzy shoes. While I liked the tiny slingbacks and oversized clutches, I didn’t feel I needed them — because I had already bought something similar from The Row… three years ago. One thing I do like that Tibi does is always invite a slew of their customers and loyalists to their shows. They do an excellent job of making the women who live in their clothes feel like a fundamental part of their community, not outsiders peering in through the window, and I commend that.
Khaite, usually pitch black inside and deafeningly loud, was white, bright, and joyful this season. After a heavy personal year and some time off, I could tell Cate Holstein was having fun again. The clothes were beautiful — not just well-styled, but strong in their capacity. She’s playing with material in ways I’ve never seen from her: crochet, beading, pom poms!
But the stalwart Khaite DNA wasn’t abandoned. There were plenty of delicious leather pieces and cool-girl staples the brand is known for. It felt so her, but a joyful her, bursting with radiance, a new Mom ready for a new chapter. Where am I going in most of these clothes? Well, I don’t know. But I’m excited to feel happy looking at Khaite again after seasons of heavy, blood-red darkness.
I had to bow out of a fun drinks thing Molly Simms was hosting —
said he spied those new Khaite peep-toe pumps which I too am dying for. My period stepped in and ultimately won the night, putting me down for the count after a long, rainy day. I do genuinely wish I could plug myself into a wall sometimes.Today is light, with just Simon Miller and Batsheva. But here’s the TL/DR on the best style moments from the last few days:
Lauren Santo Domingo in The Row’s new Pierrick jacket, styled with a black trouser and the brand’s city sandal.
The cool monochromatic Renggli release.
Green bag moments!
A Tibi look comprised of a navy nylon (?) jacket, black knee-length bike shorts, a strappy kitten-heel sandal, and an oversized oxblood clutch. Easy to do with things at home already.
More than one excited conver
sation about Juju Vera’s jewelry.
Khaite’s beaded sandals! My photo sucks!
Meg in a new Dorsey sapphire charm (similar).
The aforementioned peep-toe pumps.
Thoughtful coverage & one has to relate to dealing with a public appearance while dressing the sudden progesterone-fueled Puff Mama.. your candor & humor so refreshing . That LSD /gigantic wrap-py jacket is such a fresh silhouette.. great to see it in the wild xo
The power you have - got my period a week early yesterday 😂😂😂 walking bubble feels right. Ty for writing fashion week content that is readable and interesting for people who do not work in fashion 💗 I have been feeling green so much for fall!
