Nothing can suck the joy out of shopping for me like knowing I *have* to buy something. What is it about being on the hunt for a specific item — say, a dress for a summer wedding — that makes it both a drag to buy and impossible to hunt down?
Shopbop launched its spring sale this morning. Admittedly, I’m not really much of a Shopbop girl. I find their buy largely boring. BUT! If you use the sale to knock out some of the “have to” shopping for the season ahead, that discount makes it sting a little less.
So I’ve divvied up the Shopbop sale into what I think are more usable categories. Here’s to grabbing only the stuff you need, paying less for it, and checking that box off your list.
For the well-dressed guest.
For the Southern summer wedding: there is always that person that thinks it’s a nice idea to get married outdoors in June in Charleston. Look for something that doesn’t require any sweaty shapewear layers in a busy print to hide perspiration. The sleeveless style keeps you from melting, the ladylike length means you can still get down to “Shout”. Or opt for a summer-appropriate navy blue.
If you like to show some leg: lightweight cotton, a ditsy print, and a puff sleeve balance out the hemline. This one’s cute too.
For outdoors in the evening: a little more formal, but not black-tie for those cryptic “in-between” dress codes. Another option here.
For the wedding your ex is gonna be at: sexy, appropriate, and not gunning to outshine the bride.
An LBD: everyone needs one (or three) totally classic cuts. Try this one, this one, or this one.
Special occasion shoes: maybe you’d like a little sparkle in your step? Or would you rather put a bow on it? Something minty-fresh? Something nude? A pop of color?
A little evening bag: something summery and straw-like, something super glitzy, something daytime.
A lightweight white dress: for the engagement party if the bride is you.
A sculpted top: for when you’re gunning for best-dressed. Here’s one that’s more garden party. And one that’s more baby shower.
A dramatic gown: for when you’re giving black-tie LEWKS. Another option! And another!
A tomato-red dress: from one of my favorite new designers.
For the foundation builder.
Jean shorts: I give you the BEST ones, ever. I have a rear on me and I'm tall, so shorts are really tough for me to find. These aren't offensively short, come in a great size range (up to 34 and down to 23!), and have enough room in the leg. I wore them every day in Palm Beach and Miami. Here they are in a darker wash, too.
A classic sun hat: for poolside, for channeling your inner Nancy Meyers coastal grandma, for keeping your skin safer from sun damage.
Summer weight pajamas: in a busy print for babies who flick food, or a light-colored solid for sweaty nights. I also love this blue and white set.
Glam jams: I mean, look at that print. And this one!
A NuBra: hot tip, baby powder your underboob if you’re rocking this in the heat.
Hanky Pankys: stock up on sale if you’ve sworn by these since undergrad.
A nude bodysuit: thin straps and a thong bottom, for underneath all your white dresses. These are great too!
A blue and white striped button-down: with a twist!
A modern, practical summer carry-all: and a great price to boot. Another option!
Black flat sandals: everyone needs ‘em.
A day-to-night do-it-all summer bag: ‘nuff said.
For the good sport.
A preppy (but not dowdy) cardigan: Throw it over your shoulders when you head inside for lunch.
Leggings with a flattering waistline: hello, tiny torso.
A tennis skort: this won’t fly if your court requires whites (in that case try this one), but it’s super cute for volleying at the park.
A sporty white dress: for the courtside country clubber.
Pull-on sneakers: for studio classes, for errands, for everything.
Bike shorts: Welcome to the new legging. I wear mine with everything from blazers to workout bras.
Bala bangles: level up your hot girl walk or your Peloton ride with cute ankle/wrist weights in colors that complement your outfit.
A poolside tote: for sunscreen and trashy reads.
Because you deserve a little (under $100) treat.
A little bag. Expensive-looking earrings. Because silver is the moment. A perfect summer dress. A handy claw clip. A summer clutch. A makeup pouch.
And what’s in my cart?
