Hi, I hope everyone’s doing okay today. I watched You’ve Got Mail this morning, which made me feel better. Meg Ryan’s turtlenecks and tights are well-documented perfection.
It got me thinking. There are sweaters, and then there are Romcom Sweaters. A Romcom sweater clears the hurdle of being merely warm and soft. It’s a more distinct brand of cozy. There is the requisite chunky knit, perhaps cable, maybe with a turtleneck, but not always.
It must be oversized enough to feel blanket-like — an intimation of adult swaddling — almost threatening to swallow the wearer. It should function as a hiding place. Bonus points if the sleeves come over your fingertips. And it must have an inherited, romantic quality. It can’t look brand new, even if it is.
This feels like exactly what I want to wear this week. I went hunting and found some worthy contenders: this chunky knit from Jenni Kayne, a charcoal cable knit via Doen, this cropped number from Nili Lotan, and an absolutely stellar crewneck from Sold.Out that I want BAD.
I also flagged a lovely baby alpaca turtleneck from Sezane, the absolute dream sweater from Prada, the perfect cashmere from Lisa Yang, The Row’s iconic Ophelia sweater, and this winter white La Ligne number or lighter Sablyn sweater that would make Nancy Meyers proud.
This oversized slice of heaven from Souer is incredible, as is this yummy floppy collar from Kallmeyer. Lauren Manoogian has turned this genre into an entire identity. I love this detachable roll neck from Aligne (neat trick), and this G.Label sweater with long 90s sleeves that reminds me of Jennifer Love Hewitt on Party of Five.
The List:

While I’m not quite ready for the return of teetering red soles or stacks of Yurman cable bracelets, other old things are feeling new. Remember this ring? I kind of love it again. I’m into the return of Tiffany silver. And I’m seeing Balenciaga City Bags on the street without a lick of irony. McQueen skull scarves next? Juicy sweats? Louis Vuitton pochettes? Ahhh. I’m old!
I have on good authority Vestiaire Collective will be running like, 80% off on Black Friday. My best tip is to download the app and build your cart beforehand.
I will not be shutting up about this bra anytime soon.
I maintain that these would be a fantastic gift for anyone.
