The List: Loafers, Ceramic Matchbooks, Dutch Jewelry, and Day Clutches
Plus, a new beauty vertical
Let’s begin with a bit of news today. If you’ve been around for the nearly three years we’ve been publishing this newsletter, then you’ve seen us dabble in beauty here and there. It’s been such an overwhelmingly popular subject that I’ve decided to add a permanent beauty vertical to The Love List.
We will expand coverage to more meaningfully cover skin care, procedures, makeup, and hair. At our heart, we are a shopping newsletter — and I believe personal style extends far beyond clothes. This means sends will be more frequent as we grow.
We’re also hiring a Beauty Editor. If you think you might be a good fit, send me an email.
If you’re a beauty brand and want to work with us, send a note to Sophie Krakoff at sophie@friendsofthehousegroup.com.
The List:
Matches, ever-deeper into their administration period, has dropped discounts to 25% off. A heavy disclaimer here is that the site isn’t really accepting returns, and shipping is delayed, so shop what you know unless you’re the risky type. As a service to our paid subscribers, I pulled together a thorough edit of the items I’m most confident in yesterday.
As a lifetime connoisseur of button-down shirts, Irish brand Frank & Eileen recently impressed me with their Shirley shirt. It’s an oversized fit, great for haplessly rolling up sleeves or fastening only a single button. It’s made from a sturdy Italian cotton that gives it a bit of structure, and it’s machine-friendly. It’s already entered my heavy rotation. It steams right up with my Nori iron, a gadget that I have become a little obsessed with.
Take any leather jacket and make it Phoebe.
I popped into the St. John store in Palm Beach last week—a brand that, as you may have read, is experiencing a Millennial renaissance. This groovy knit is on its way to me, which I’ll style with jeans and flats to foil the reputation of the brand. (I have it on good authority that they have some very cool collaborations on the horizon; stay tuned.)
Loafers are a hot topic in our subscriber chat: which are the best? The most comfortable? The coolest of cool-girl? Here’s my two pennies: if you’re looking for an easy, super-soft loafer with no break-in, Jamie Haller’s penny loafer is it. I love the brown colorway in particular. If you have narrow feet or a higher arch, like me, Emme Parsons’ Danielle loafer will feel custom — it is my most-worn shoe. If your feet are widerand you have a lower arch, go for Freda Salvador’s Elba penny loafer — mine slip off my heels but my girlfriend with same-size wider feet adores them. If you like a “fuck you, I’m a rich bitch” loafer that feels as expensive as it looks, then The Row’s eel soft loafer is the one, G.
I’m obsessed with Monies’ statement jewelry. These earrings are fantastic and I wish they’d been with me poolside last weekend.
If I had an event coming up that warranted the spend, I’d be in this Gucci silk shift and these coordinating Prada heels. Someone do it for me.
On the subject of beachy things, Doen x K.Jacques is now live! I teased this in last week’s mood board/playlist letter but now you can actually shop ‘em.
The vibe is: summer camp. I’m looking at these miu miu sandals (replete with friendship bracelets of many sorts, as styled on the runway) and this plastic woven Marni Market bag. Wait, do we also need colored band-aids? Niche sidebar: do any of my old Atlanta friends remember Clay Reeves and his shoe line Clay + Bros.? Because he had the parachute cord/vibram sole idea in 2014 — for $68. Clay, where art thou? Miuccia would like a word!
A reader asked if I could round up all of the discount codes brands have kindly extended to our community in one place, so here you go:
JESS20 for 20% off at U Beauty (try the new face oil, it’s phenomenal).
LOVELIST20 for 20% off at iNNBEAUTY (love their moisturizer, a $48 comp for Augustinus Bader with a refillable bottle).
JESSGRAVES10 for 10% off at La Ligne (their Marin sweater is a reader favorite, but look at their dress section for spring events, too).
JESS20 for 20% off at Aureum (particularly calling out the new St. Germain sunnies in red).
JESSG25 for 25% off at Captain Blankenship (fine-haired readers will love the Seaweed Shampoo).
GRAVES20 for 20% off at Ami Cole (obsessed with their glosses and multi-stick).
JESS15 for 15% off at Jenni Kayne (as of late, my WFH uniform has been pretty much defined by their Saturday sweatpants, which are as good as everyone says).
JESS15 for 15% off at Anablue (I love their hair oil; it’s so sexy and fragrant).
JESS15 for 15% off at Nerra (stock up for legs out season).
JESSG15 for 15% off at OneSkin (readers love their sunscreen).
I’m really into styling a huge clutch for day lately. It looks so cool in action as you move. I’ve been wearing an old Dante clutch by The Row I got two years ago, but I’ve seen the Dani Michelle twins, a.k.a. Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner, both wear the Bottega Falcon clutch the same way. The key is it has to be BIG. HUGE! It’s got to overwhelm your frame a little. I found a cool comp at Zara men, but what about a slick document case? Just thinking aloud.
Friendly reminder that Sephora’s twice-annual sale begins on Friday with 20% off for VIB Rouge with code YAYSAVE, so hold off on your Sephora errand ‘til the end of the week. (You can build your cart ahead of time.) The last time we tackled this behemoth sale was in 2022, so I will be in your inbox first thing Friday morning with some new suggestions.
Actual text from me to
, above. And now, both Alex Mill and Still Here are making overalls. As I’ve said before, there are influencers, and then there are people with influence. Next up, will have us all wearing Capri pants while makes a case for pillbox hats. I maintain my stance on stirrup leggings (bullish). After reading Dakota Fanning’s interview in Vogue, I’m setting aside time this weekend (after the Solar Eclipse, of course) to watch Netflix’s retelling of The Talented Mr. Ripley. It promises to be completely different from the 1999 movie; shot in black and white, told in 8 parts, with Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley (!!!)
I can’t decide if Jil Sander or Gucci should be more upset about this. Surely though, miu miu is upset about this.
My friend Ashley put me onto Salon 21 in Soho, which is where I found Catie Curry, a ceramicist with whom I think I’m destined to be friends based on our mutual fondness for matches. (I also want to peek the Leo Kaspar/Andrew Pierce Scott exhibition nearby-ish at TIWA.)
Parting thought and I need your help! I’ve been hosting more dinner parties lately (speaking of, this was a delightful read), which has spawned some naturally curious DMs and link requests for items in my home. What do you think? Should I have my home photographed and link everything for a letter to send, or is that veering too far off-topic? I could even break it into dinner party necessities (plates, place cards, flower courses, etc.), art collecting, making the bed (omg, Hill House sheets) etc.
Those matchbook boxes!!
MONIES!!!! Love them...pieces that ooze character and individuality! Bold without feeling overly contrived. I've only discovered them recently, and I've been obsessing over a few of their pieces... It's funny that you mentioned them here. Perhaps it's a sign.
